The fungal infection which occurs in the toenails is usually caused by a special kind of fungus known as a dermatophyte. This type of fungal infection is known as Onychomycosis and the fungi are confined to the horny dead outer layers of the skin and will move gradually to the nail plate. This fungal infection is most commonly found in the toenails of older men but can affect the toenails of individuals of any sex and age. The treatment for this condition is very much complicated as these fungi tend to live in the dead tissue and problem arises when medications are given to these sites.

These fungal infections can be asymptomatic which do not seem to diminish the distress of the patient with the unpleasant appearance of the toenail. The traditional treatment will not be the perfect choice of treatment for this infection even though it is effective, inexpensive and safe. Laser treatment is considered as the best treatment for toenail fungus infection since the approval of the procedure by the Food and Drug Administration several years ago. Many different types of laser therapies are now available across the globe for the treatment of Onychomycosis like the PinPointe Foot Laser.

Lasers have the ability to heat and destroy the harmful fungi but spare the healthy surrounding tissue. Few lab tests suggest they can kill the fungus and cure the condition.

Laser technology is very advanced and modernized and is, therefore, a good choice of treatment for many human diseases. They produce coherent light energy of specific wavelength and of sufficient strength which is then projected into the tissue and is absorbed by the material producing heat and therefore destroys the tissue.

If the fungal infection in the toenails is particularly stubborn then laser treatment will be a good option. The fungi will be removed by the high doses of light energy emitted by the laser. Various researches and studies in the early stages have said that the laser treatment will be helpful in treating fungal toenail infections but cannot be used as a routine treatment. The treatment will not be effective if it is carried out only once. Multiple sessions are required are required for the treatment to be successful. But still, laser treatment is recommended as the best choice of treatment if the case is severe.
